How to get the cheapest domain names!

as some people may know, i used to own a domain that i bought for pretty cheap, and found out pretty late that the catch was the 90EUR per year renewal

if you don't want to end up with the trouble of changing domain names, follow these steps i wish i knew when i bought my domain:

  1. Think of a domain name
  • this is often the hardest part
  • memorable, relevant, KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid)
  • choose a domain that can server multiple uses (site1.example.com, site2.example.com, example.com)
  1. Think of the purpose of your domain
  • everyone needs a personal portfolio, especially if you are interested in technology (+ can impress future employers)
  • decide what your domain will be used for: business, blog, website, home assistant, dashboard, ...
  1. Think about how long you would like this domain
  • some "registrars" (places that sell domains) offer better deals for multi-year plans (3 year plans might be cheaper than annual renewals)
  1. Think about SEO friendliness
  • how important is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for your site?
  • do you want people to find your website easily?
  • this can influence your Top Level Domain (TLD) choice (.net, .org, .com, .tech, .io)
  1. Research and compare prices
  • go to tld-list.com
  • enter your desired domain
  • choose a domain
  • visit the site that it recommends

some extra tips

  • read the fine print, check for hidden fees (most of the sites listed on tld-list are trusted though, so you should be fine)
  • look for coupon codes and discounts, its worth it
  • consider alternative TLDs, some might be taken or too expensive
  • check registrar's reviews
  • check registrar's domain transfer list in case you ever want to move your domain to another registrar
